This blog is dedicated to spotlighting select songs of independent or small-label artists. These songs can often (but not always) be characterized as pop music, encompassing its many sub-genres. However, none of these songs can be classified as “Top 40” (or any sub-genre thereof) typically heard on American radio and television. Proving that good, quality pop music is available…you just have to be willing to search for it or know where to find it. This blog takes away all of the work and leads the reader/listener straight to the discovery and enjoyment. The ultimate goal, of course, is to bring these “unknown” artists to the attention of the general public and give them well-deserved attention.

Song in the Spotlight: “Save You” (Matthew Perryman Jones, from Until the Dawn Appears (2011))

Genre:  Alternative Pop

Review:  A song about living life to the fullest and having no regrets, “Save You” also strikes up a chord for the anti-nihilist crowd.  Put your own self-interest aside and maybe you can “save” someone else…maybe even someone important to you.  After more than a decade of recording, Matthew Perryman Jones’ evocative tenor shows no signs of faltering.  He has a way of conveying emotion with the slightest lilt that makes your ears sit up and take notice.  And if you haven’t noticed Matthew Perryman Jones by now, then now’s the time to correct that oversight by giving “Save You” a spin (or ten) and then delving into the rest of Mr. Jones’ excellent catalogue.   Rating: 4 stars (out of 5)
