This blog is dedicated to spotlighting select songs of independent or small-label artists. These songs can often (but not always) be characterized as pop music, encompassing its many sub-genres. However, none of these songs can be classified as “Top 40” (or any sub-genre thereof) typically heard on American radio and television. Proving that good, quality pop music is available…you just have to be willing to search for it or know where to find it. This blog takes away all of the work and leads the reader/listener straight to the discovery and enjoyment. The ultimate goal, of course, is to bring these “unknown” artists to the attention of the general public and give them well-deserved attention.

Song in the Spotlight: “Stay With Me Tonight” (Emma Wallace, from A Reason to Stay Up All Night (2007))

Genre:  Alternative Pop

Review:  If it never occurred to you to segue classical music (in this case, Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata”) into swing jazz/ragtime, then you’re in for a real treat with Emma Wallace’s “Stay With Me Tonight.”  It’s a diabolical and captivating cocktail of musical styles that will have you asking “why has no one ever thought of this before?”  Well, maybe they have, but Ms. Wallace elevates it to a whole new level of “gotta listen to THAT again.”  Pay close attention to the well-thought-out lyrics and their playful delivery, both hallmarks of Ms. Wallace’s songwriting.  For lack of a better term, TuneTraveller dubs it “classical swing.”  Call it anything you like, but also call up all of your friends and neighbors to clue them in to the talent that is Emma Wallace.  And be sure not to overcrowd the download queue…there’s plenty for everyone.  Rating: 4 stars (out of 5)
