Review:  “Waiting…” is a radio-ready hit just waiting to explode.  If the song catches on, beyond the obvious popular appeal (and, hopefully, the accompanying wide-spread success), it should also garner Mr. deBlanc some serious songwriting credibility.  The male-female vocal trade-off isn’t a new idea, but it is done to near perfection.  You’ll appreciate the catchy melody, the tempo changes and the storyline.  C’mon, indie radio stations…show Mr. deBlanc some love!  As for the rest of you, don’t let this one pass you by.  Download it today and impress your friends that, this time, you’re in the vanguard.  Rating: 4 1/2 stars (out of 5)

Review:  Andrew Ripp describes Won’t Let Go as an “…album…rooted in the idea of hope and love.”  While that’s a little vague, one interpretation might be that the listener can expect to hear songs including such universal themes as love and loss, hope and sorrow and downfall and redemption.  Common themes for many artists.  However, Andrew Ripp separates himself from the field with his knack for writing a catchy melody and his soulful delivery.  “Cool Ya (Nobody Loves You Like I Do)” exemplify these qualities while staying true to Mr. Ripp’s description.  TuneTraveller will let you decide the song’s message.  Is it singable?  Check.  Is it danceable?  Check.  It’s the kind of song that, once discovered, is difficult to put down.  And then you want to share it with a thousand of your closest friends.  Let the sharing begin.   Rating: 4 1/2 stars (out of 5)

Genre:  Pop Rock

Review:  From what little information there is available, TuneTraveller thinks Easton is still together as a band.  Hard to tell for certain.  What’s not uncertain is the mass appeal of “She Walks In.”  Fun, catchy, up-tempo, high energy…all rolled together into one infectious pop song.  And it doesn’t hurt that the lyrical content is a theme most everyone will find relatable.  But don’t take TuneTraveller’s word for it…give it a spin and check it out for yourself.  Because if you don’t like “She Walks In” then you need to schedule an appointment with the school nurse or your audiologist because there’s definitely something wrong with your hearing.  Easton is practically giving the song away on Bandcamp so sign up for your digital download today.  In any event, that’s a better outcome than discovering you’re tone-deaf.  Rating: 4 1/2 stars (out of 5)

Review:  Self-styled music critics always seem to be searching for a way to describe the sound of an artist by making comparisons to more established artists.  While, in some cases, comparisons may be inevitable, TuneTraveller generally avoids them, preferring to believe that every artist demands to be heard on the merits of their own unique sound and creativity.  So, dispensing with any such comparisons, let’s discuss the merits of My Dear Wendy and Amanda Gunnels.  Specifically, My Dear Wendy’s new single “Thieves.”  Despite the accompanying video, it seems patently obvious that the song has an underlying message and a broader agenda than the lyrics suggest.  “Thieves” definitely isn’t a 3-minute throwaway…your attention is actually required.  That’s a rare attribute in the world of pop music.  Because while 3-minute throwaways certainly have their place, we should sit up and take notice and applaud the effort when an artist goes in the opposite direction with a song that’s slightly more serious in content, yet still achieves a catchy melody and sing-able lyrics.  Thank you, Ms. Gunnels, for raising the bar.  TuneTraveller hopes that your laudable effort is rewarded with a substantial number of digital downloads.  So, provided you enjoy the song, please show your support by getting your copy today.  Rating: 4 stars (out of 5)

Song in the Spotlight: “Back It Up” (Jenna Marotta, from Gypsy (2014))

Genre:  Throwback Pop

Review:  A blend of Motown (replete with a horn section) and borderline 1970s-era Disco (particularly the vocal stylings) coupled with dead-on pop sensibilities, “Back It Up” will have you up and out of your seat from the opening bars.  At first glance, Motown, Disco and pop seem to have little in common; however, rest assured that these styles share many of the same roots and Ms. Marotta has integrated them to perfection.  Given the opportunity, “Back It Up” should find equal acceptance on the dance floor and with the nostalgia set.  Is that a testament to these music styles or a testament to Ms. Marotta’s songwriting prowess…or both?  You’ll have to decide for yourself.  What you don’t have to decide (or, at least, spend any time thinking about) is whether to download the song.  Go on.  Then invite some 50-somethings over and watch them re-enact their Disco moves while the 20-somethings show them how it’s really done.  Rating: 4 stars (out of 5)

Review:  If you’re having a not-so-stellar day, “Sooner”  provides an instantaneous mood enhancer.  Think about the one you love, assume the chair-dancing position and allow yourself to be transported to a better place.  If you haven’t guessed already, “Sooner” is a happy song filled with hope and good feelings.  If that’s your cup of tea, then make it your mission to download it today!  Mr. Allen has a voice well-suited for this type of sunshiny pop and he also makes the lyrics more interesting by telling us the story was related to him by someone else (when we really know it’s auto-biographical…wink, wink).  So, put the doldrums away and, instead, let the seduction of “Sooner” put a smile on your face.  Rating: 4 stars (out of 5)

Genre:  Alternative Pop

Review:  Not something old, not something borrowed and not something blue, but definitely something new.  Well, maybe a few borrowed elements (but, who doesn’t?); however, James Randall’s “Let It Show” simply takes the best of pop and soul and smoothly blends them together into a mid-tempo treat as tempting as a chocolate and vanilla swirl ice cream cone on a hot Summer day.  You’ll have to decide for yourself if it’s that tasty, but one thing’s for sure…like the ice cream cone, “Let It Show” doesn’t last long enough and there’s a certain disppointment when it’s gone, so you’ll need to savor every delicious note.  Luckily for you, you can download the song and listen to your heart’s content.  And remember this.  Too much ice cream…bad.  Too much “Let It Show”…good.  Very good.  Rating: 4 stars (out of 5)

Song in the Spotlight: “Hey Pretty Lady” (Nick Sabia, from Time Lapse – EP (2014))

Genre:  Jazz/Pop

Review:    TuneTraveller generally has low expectations for any song containing the words “pretty” and “lady” (or any variation thereof); however, “Hey Pretty Lady” by Nick Sabia is an exception to the rule.  The song is more jazz than pop, but definitely contains elements of pop music.  And, let’s face it, every once in a while changing things up and broadening your horizons can be a good thing.  In any event, once you start playing the song, you’ll quickly find the groove (and maybe even find yourself snapping your fingers in time).  And, after a few listens, probably singing along, as well.  Allow your imagination to roam a little and you can picture a smokey piano bar with the man behind the ivories trying out his pick-up lines.  Mr. Sabia is in fine voice with this bouncy, little number and it’s no stretch to suggest that you’ll enjoy it so much that you’ll immediately download it and add it to your every-day music rotation.   Rating: 4 stars (out of 5)

Song in the Spotlight: “My Kind of Language” (Open Range Torch Songs, from Open Range Torch Songs, Vol. II (2008?))

Genre:  Alternative Pop

Review:  Have you ever run across one of those songs that’s interesting and oh-so-fun, but frustrated because you can’t find/buy/download it anywhere?  That’s an apt description for “My Kind of Language.”  The vocals are a little scratchy and need to be re-mixed to bring them more to the fore, but that’s a minor criticism because the song is greater than the sum of its parts.  It has a certain Latin flavor overlaid by liberal doses of violin and you know exactly where the song is headed with the opening salvo of “Senorita, your eyes are holding mine.”  It’s a lust-filled, south-of-the-border yarn sure to pique your interest, if not your libido.  “My Kind of Language” would have made for a fun video, but alas, TuneTraveller suspects the band never had the funds or the proper backing.  It may take a little more work than usual to get this song into your musical library, but well-worth the small effort.  Rating: 4 stars (out of 5)

Song in the Spotlight: “Silence” (Dune Tran, from Heart Anchors (2009))

Genre:  Alternative Pop

Review:  If your musical tastes run to beautiful, melodic pop (and, let’s face it, whose doesn’t?), then Dune Tran’s “Silence” may be just the ticket.  But wait…it also has some bite as it picks up the tempo half-way through until reaching a crescendo before reverting to the opening theme at the coda.  Slow, fast, slow again.  Play, listen, repeat, download.  “Silence” isn’t the kind of song you can listen to casually.  It engages you, makes you sit up and take notice and sounds new and discoverable, even with repeated listenings.  And don’t skip the video…the cinematography is stunning.  Heart Anchors is Ms. Tran’s only release to date and we’ve waited long enough to hear what she can do with her sophomore effort.  Rating: 4 stars (out of 5)
